How to Use an Inhaler - Method A

Method A: Open mouth with inhaler 1 to 2 inches away
Step 1

Remove the cap and shake the inhaler.

Step 2

Tilt your head back slightly and breathe out slowly.
Step 3

Hold the inhaler 1 to 2 inches in front of your mouth.
Step 4

Start breathing in slowly through your mouth as you press down on the inhaler one time. Breathe in slowly, as deep as you can (3 to 5 seconds).
Step 5

Hold your breath for 10 seconds (if you can). This helps the medicine to reach deep into your lungs.
Step 6

Repeat puff as directed by your provider, starting with step 2. For quick-relief medicine, wait about one minute between puffs.
