How to Use an Inhaler - Method B

Method B: Use spacer/holding chamber
Step 1

Insert the mouthpiece of the inhaler into the opening at the flat end of the spacer.

Step 2

Hold the spacer and inhaler together and shake well.

Step 3

Seal your mouth tightly around the mouthpiece of the spacer.

Step 4

Breathe out slowly.

Step 5

Press down on the inhaler one time, and immediately begin to breathe in slowly, as deep as you can (3 to 5 seconds).

Step 6

Remove the spacer from mouth. Hold your breath for 10 seconds (if you can). This helps the medicine to reach deep into your lungs.

Step 7
Repeat puff as directed by your provider, starting with step 3. For quick-relief medicine, wait about one minute between puffs.
