Before Applying to Waive BCBS

You should consider these key concerns:

Being in good health is of the utmost importance to maintaining good academic standing as well as quality of life. The decision to waive should not be made without considering what may happen should you become ill or injured. We urge you to be prepared for unforeseen problems by making sure you have adequate health insurance coverage. If you do not have adequate health insurance, an unforeseen medical problem could result in catastrophic expenses that could undermine your family's financial security. You will want to ensure that your insurance does not have any network restrictions, or policies regarding notification and pre-certification that may affect or prohibit coverage while in Massachusetts. Keep in mind that if you waive the Harvard Student BCBS Plan, and you are hospitalized or receive any care outside of HUHS, neither the University nor the Student Health Insurance Program will be responsible for those expenses.

Before Applying to Waive SHF

You should consider these key concerns:

If you choose to waive SHF...

  • You also waive the prescription benefit that is included under the SHF coverage.
  • You remain eligible to be seen on a fee-for-service basis at Harvard University Health Services for urgent care only.
  • You agree to take full responsibility for all other health care costs incurred inside of the Harvard University Health Services during period of waiver.
