Prescription Monitoring Program

February 17, 2009

Effective January 1, 2009

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health Drug Control Program has recently implemented a new program.  All Massachusetts' pharmacies are required to inspect and obtain customer identification for all Scheduled II prescriptions (e.g., amphetamine
containing medications, oxycodone containing medication, morphine, etc
.).  Pharmacies will have the option of inspecting Customer I.D. and collecting information either when the customer presents the written prescription at the pharmacy, or when the customer receives the filled prescription.

The HUHS Pharmacy will inspect and obtain customer identification when a patient drops off a Scheduled II prescription.

Note: The customer is the person presenting the written prescription to the pharmacy or the person receiving the filled prescription.  The customer and patient may be the same individual, but need not be the same.  For example, the customer may be the parent presenting a written prescription for a child, or a relative receiving a filled prescription for a housebound family member.

Acceptable forms of I.D. are:

  • Valid Driver's License
  • MA Registry of Motor Vehicles Identification
  • Valid Military I.D. Card
  • Valid Passport
There are exceptions to the Customer I.D. Requirement.  For more information speak directly to a HUHS Pharmacist.
